Nostalgia of Yesterday's Tomorrow, Burning Man: Man Pavillion 2025
by Violet Divine, Markus Krause & Jacqueline Blakely
Our immersive installation explores the intersection of humanity, emotion, and technology.
Our robot - inspired by Maria from the 1927 film Metropolis - can engage visitors in
conversation. Although sophisticated, it retains some quirky "bugs" - or are they features? -
and even displays traits of human nature, such as pesky emotions. As a result, its reactions
to visitors are often unpredictable.
Visitors to the installation are invited to engage directly with our robot through speech.
The system uses an AI note-taking tool capable of distinguishing between multiple speakers.
The robot keeps track of conversations and its own emotional state or mood. These moods are
expressed both verbally and through the pulsating lights that surround it.
The Robot is a slightly larger-than-life figure inspired by Maria from Metropolis.
Constructed from wood, it measures 7 feet tall. Visitors communicate with the robot
through a natural language processing AI, allowing for spontaneous and varied responses.
Emotional shifts are triggered using sentiment analysis of user inputs, combined with
intentional randomness.
